Testing direct UV printing on aluminum decorative license plates using the xTool Omni O1. Experimenting with print quality, adhesion, and durability to develop custom and personalized plates for potential sale, including local school designs and other decorative options.
The Idea
I’ve been experimenting with printing directly onto aluminum license plate blanks using the xTool Omni O1. I’ve seen plenty of sublimated plates, but I wanted to see how well direct UV printing would work and whether it could be something worth making and selling.
The idea is to offer custom decorative plates with names, photos, local school designs, and pretty much anything else people might want.
What I’ve Done So Far
I’ve printed the first few test plates and I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. The colors look good, the details are sharp, and the ink seems to be sticking well.
Of course, looking good right off the printer doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll hold up over time, so I’ve been putting them through some basic durability tests.
Durability Testing
So far I’ve done:
- Wet rubbing test: Used a white lint-free cloth with water and rubbed the same area back and forth 20 times with medium pressure. Each back-and-forth counts as two passes, so that’s 40 passes over the same spot.
- Heavier rubbing test: Followed that with another 30 back-and-forth strokes (60 passes) using more pressure than the first test.
- Total: 100 passes over the same area.
- Standing water test: Testing how the print handles water sitting directly on the surface.
I’m also interested in seeing how they hold up to sunlight, rain, temperature changes, and general outdoor exposure. That’s going to take some time to figure out.
I don’t want to advertise something as weatherproof or fade-resistant without knowing whether it actually is.
How I’m Making Them
The process is pretty straightforward. I design the artwork, clean and position the aluminum blank, and print directly onto it with the Omni. No sublimation paper, heat press, or transfers involved.
I’m still experimenting with the print settings to find the best balance between quality, durability, print time, and ink usage.
I also need to document the actual costs so I can run everything through the THP Pricing Calculator and figure out what makes sense to charge.
